Mutiny Memoirs - Itinerary ( 12 nights /
13
days )
Day 01 Arrival
In Delhi.
On arrival in Delhi, transfer for 3 nights at the Hotel Imperial
or similar. At leisure all day on this day
until evening, when we will meet over a light dinner
(this welcome dinner is
included) and have an
introductory talk from a Mutiny expert. Overnight in Delhi.
Day 02
Delhi / Meerut / Delhi
Breakfast at hotel and post breakfast we drive to Meerut - scene of the first mutinous action on the
parade ground of the Cantonment. Visit St. John's Church and the
Ochterlony tomb. Return to Delhi en route visiting Badli ki
Serai. Overnight in Delhi.
Day 03
Delhi
After breakfast today we visit the Red Fort, the Jama Masjid, Humayun's Tomb, the Rajpath
and tour a collection of Imperial memorabilia.
Our full day tour of the important
historical sites will include the 1911 Durbar, the Telegraph
Office, Kashmir Gate, Skinner’s Church, the Civil Lines, the
Ridge and Nicholson’s Tomb and the 17th century walled city of
Shah Jahan. Back to hotel and overnight in Delhi.
Day 04
Delhi / Agra
Early morning with packed breakfast we drive to Agra by an
exclusive car/coach (200 km 4.5 hrs). En route we stop for tea
at the highway and carry on to Agra. Also visit Sikandra before
reaching Agra. Upon arrival check-in at hotel Jaypee Palace.
Post lunch we explore Agra Fort
and its role in the Mutiny 'siege'. Also take a tour of the finest
Moghul monument the Taj Mahal. Back to hotel and overnight.
Day 05
Agra / Gwalior
Breakfast will be served at the hotel and post breakfast we
continue by road to Gwalior upon arrival check-in at hotel Taj
Usha Kiran. Full day tour of the
architecturally memorable Fort and sites associated with the
Rani of Jhansi. Also wath the light & sound show at the
Gwalior Fort. Back to hotel and overnight in Gwalior.
Day 06
Gwalior / Jhansi / Gwalior
This morning after our breakfast we will drive to Jhansi to relive the Rani of Jhansi's heroic
struggle in 1857. Here we will visit the Fort, the contemporary British cemetery and
the battle site of Kotah Ka Serai. Evening back to Gwalior and
overnight at hotel Taj Usha Kiran in Gwalior.
Day 07
Gwalior / Kanpur
Morning drive to Kanpur (4 hours). Check in at the Hotel Landmark
for a night. No traveller visits Kanpur unless with
Cawnpore in mind and even then much has to be viewed in
imagination with suitable texts to follow the action, for few
signs remain. Here our experts will be invaluable. Today Kanpur
is a sprawling industrial town with a military camp almost
exactly as the British left it. Afternoon visit to the site of
Wheeler’s Entrenchment inside the Cantonment and the adjacent
All Souls Church with brass memorials to some of the central
victims and survivors of the massacres as well as a series of
marble panels engraved with more than a thousand victims’
names. Afterwards we will drive a short distance towards the
Ganges before walking down the ravine to the Satichaura Ghat.
Evening talk about some of the principal characters involved in
the Mutiny at Cawnpore. Back to hotel and overnight in Kanpur.
Day 08
Kanpur / Lucknow
After breakfast, we will visit the Memorial Park and the Hanging
tree and the now covered well near the Bibighar. In the
afternoon, we will drive upstream a little way to visit Bithur
and Nana Rao Park, returning to Kanpur in time for Lunch. Check
out and drive to Lucknow (2hrs), en route we stop in Alambagh to
pay homage to Henry Havelock's tomb. On arrival in Lucknow
Check-in at hotel Taj Residency for 02 nights. Overnight at Taj
Residency in Lucknow.
Day 09
Lucknow
A full day to explore the Mutiny sites in Lucknow, the centre-piece
being the Residency, where we will carry out a detailed tour and
hold a commemoration. We will visit the Sikander Bagh and the
extraordinary edifice of the La Martiniere School and Hodson's
tomb.
In the afternoon, we will visit
a knowledgeable book collector and seller. Special Banquet in
the evening by invitation to you will be hosted at a local house
of an erstwhile royal (today's
dinner included). Post
dinner back to hotel and overnight.
Day 10
Lucknow / Calcutta
Breakfast at hotel and today post breakfast we will be transferred to Lucknow airport
in time to connect our flight to Calcutta (Dep: 1000 hrs).
Arrive Calcutta at 1220 hrs, here we will be transferred to The
Taj Bengal (3 nights). Visit the Victoria Memorial
collections, the Cathedral and take a boat ride along the
waterfront. Overnight at hotel Taj Bengal in Calcutta.
Day 11
Calcutta
Breakfast at hotel and post breakfast we visit the Flower Markets; the Ghats with their backdrop of East
India Company warehouses.
A walk through the statue makers' quarter will bring to life a
whole culture of myth and belief that otherwise we could miss. Explore old Calcutta’s great
Raj houses and institutions, the University area, Fort William,
St. John’s Church and the oldest British grave in India. Back
to hotel and overnight.
Day 12
Calcutta
Morning visit to South Park Cemetery with its extraordinary
memorials and tombs. Another day of exploration with some
surprises. Back to hotel, dinner and overnight (if
you have a late evening flight back home, you may even decrease
a day here, replace it with one more in Agra Lucknow.).
Day 13
Calcutta / Home
Transfer to International Airport to connect our flight back
home
